The Greeks built the statue to honor the King of their Gods Zeus. This was also the spot where the first Olympic games where held, which were also to honor Zeus. The temple started construction between 470 and 460B.C. It was completed in 456B.C. The designer was Libon of Elis. It was built on a rectangular platform and had 13 columns on two sides and 6 on the other two. The temple was to plain for the Greeks so they built a Giant statue of Zeus in it and that statue later became one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. The man who made it was Phidias. The statue was in the western end of the temple and was 40 feet tall and 22 feet wide. In his right hand he held the goddess of victory (Nike). In his left he held a scepter. He sat on a throne made of gold, ebony, ivory and inlaid with precious stones and also had mythical creatures carved in it. His skin is made of ivory and his hair, beard, and robe are made of gold.
The statue of Zeus was destroyed by a fire after it already had flood, fire, and structure damage. It was moved by wealthy Greeks and survived until AD 462. Nothing remains in Olympia today; it was completely destroyed by the fire. The statue stood 4 stories high or 40 feet!

Chersiphron was the person who built the Templ of Artemis. Artemis was an ancient goddess and the temple was built as a shrine to her. The temple had over 100 stone columns that propped up the roof. The city of Ephesus, where the temple was located, was a major trade port. The temple didn’t exist for very long due to being conquered by King Croesus of Lydia. While the struggle against the king went on, the temple demolished. King Croesus restored the temple. The temple is made of marble it was 425 feet high and 225 feet wide. It had 127 60 foot high columns these columns were aligned orthogonally except for the center room. It was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times like in 356 B.C. it burned down. The man who burned it down was Herostratus. It was rebuilt by Scopas of Paros. Then in 262 A. D. it was destroyed by the Goths. After that in 401 A.D. the Christians destroyed it.
In 1863 a man named John Turtle Wood was sent to look for the temple by the British Museum. It took him 6 years to find it but in 1869 he found the temple. He and his men had to remove 132,000 cubic yards of swamp to make a hole that was 300 feet wide and 500 feet long. Then they shipped what they found to the British Museum where it still is today. Then in 1904 a man named D. G. Hograth found evidence of five other temples all built on top of each other at that same location.

Colossus of Rhodes

external image colossus_of_rhodes.jpg
The Colossus of Rhodes is more of a trophy than a statue. It was sculpted by Lysippos pupil Chares of Lindos. It was put at the eastern part of the Mandraki harbour. The statue was put there as a triumphant statue of they’re most favored god, Helios. It took the sculptor 12 years to finish the massive statue, it stood about 110 ft high. At around 226 B.C. a massive earthquake hit Rhodes and the statue fell after breaking at its weakest point, the knees. The statue laid in ruins for nearly a millennium. In A.D. 654 the Arabs invaded Rhodes and when they came upon the statue, they took the remains apart and sold them where the statue was lost forever. No one really knows what the statue’s true form was, but they believe it was a copper statue similar to the Statue of Liberty.

Pharos of Alexandria

The picture is from
Ptolemy II built the lighthouse for his father. The lighthouse was found on the ancient island of Alexandria in Egypt. It was sometime built around 270 B.C. The lighthouse stands 400feet tall. Sostratus was the designer and also just happened to be a Greek architect. It was also designed while King Ptolemy II was in the reign of Alexandria. The lighthouse lead people out on the sea to Alexandria for 1,500 years. It is claimed that an earthquake in the 14th century of A.D. knocked it down. Many archeologists say that at the top of the lighthouse in the day time there was a mirror so that the sun could reflect off of it and guide sailors in. Also, in the night time they say that there is a fire so they can see the fire and guide them in at night too. In 1996, a bunch of divers, were diving in the Mediterranean Sea and they claimed to find the ruins of the famous fabled Lighthouse of Alexandria.
